"Sixty is the new Forty." Look around you; today's Seniors are more active than ever. And despite the continuing increase in the percentage of young couples and young families on cruise vacations, Seniors continue to represent a major cruise demographic. In fact, with the "boomers" advancing in age, a huge upswing is now underway.
There are important factors that can sway a Senior to choose one cruise over another. We've identified several below and if a particular cruise claims them all, it's a shoo-in for our "Best Cruises for Seniors" list.
- Compelling Itinerary. While the Caribbean beaches remains a popular choice, Seniors lead the way to Alaska, Asia, Canada & New England, Europe and South America. Interesting, historical ports with breathtaking scenery top the list.
- Senior-Friendly. Cruise lines that have traditionally catered to the mature traveler have an advantage here. Seniors are a loyal bunch and appreciate a line whose service, onboard programs and refined shipboard ambiance reward them!
- Enrichment Programs. Step into any any shipboard culinary arts class, computer seminar, language lesson, guest speaker lecture, pottery-making class or Tango lesson...and look around - most attendees are probably Seniors!
- Small to Medium-size Ships. Seniors traveling with spouses or other Seniors often prefer smaller ships - and for two reasons: They don't need or use the highly-touted facilities of "mega-liners" (skating rinks, water slides, etc.) or they're not crazy about all the decks or the distances to travel.
