Port Overview

Miami sizzles.

Buffed, tanned bodies strut the hot sand and streets of South Beach. Movie stars and fashion models sweat and grind to the pounding sounds of salsa and techno at Lincoln Road Mall discos. Steaks and seafood fry on the grills of trendy restaurants in stylish Coconut Grove.

Hot, spicy, sizzling: words to describe the people, the sounds, and the tastes of Miami.

It wasn't always like this. A generation ago, Miami appeared to be wasting away in the sub-tropical sun. As jet travel opened the doors of the Caribbean to vacationing North Americans, the doors to the once-popular Miami Beach began to close. Gone were the top-name entertainers, missing were the tanning tourists, absent were the families and honeymooners.

They're back. Perhaps it was the growth of the Miami's Cuban community - outside of Havana, the largest population of Cubans in the world. Perhaps it was the burgeoning Latin American trade and travel creating a Caribbean crossroads of the city. Perhaps it was the charm of the Art Deco hotels of South Beach. Perhaps it was the irresistible beauty of endless beaches and the warmth of winter sun.

Probably, it was all of these factors that, together, breathed life back into Miami. Today, the city is undisputedly Florida's most cosmopolitan, most visited, most "in" spot. It's also the world's busiest cruise port, offering millions of cruise passengers a chance to sample the sizzle.
